Che cosa è il nero?
Il Nero non è un colore. Se si parla di sintesi additiva, il nero è semplicemente l’assenza di luce, e se si parla di sintesi sottrattiva nero è un materiale che, non riflettendo alcuna lunghezza d’onda della luce che lo investe, non restituisce nessun colore. Forse per questo, più di ogni altro colore, il nero è il fondamento della nostra percezione visiva, e quindi dell’arte e del design. Il nero nell’arte Preistorica
Il nero rappresenta anche la prima convenzione della rappresentazione artistica: il contorno. Fin dalle caverne, quando gli uomini hanno cominciato a tracciare con il carbone le figure degli animali, il tratto nero del contorno, lontanissimo dal vero, è stato il tramite che ci ha permesso di fare quel salto essenziale tra natura e rappresentazione. Il pensiero astratto è stato in grado di tradurre un cervo o un cavallo in un contorno e così nascono la pittura, prima, e la scrittura, in seguito.

Per raccontare il Nero ho pensato di procedere in un modo un po’ diverso dal solito, senza rispettare un unico filo conduttore, ma raccontando tre piccole storie diverse. Le metterò in ordine cronologico, tanto per rispettare almeno una convenzione, ma, a guardarle bene, vi accorgerete che godono tutte di una longevità fuori dal tempo.

Tezcatlipoca, il dio nero della Bellezza
Il British Museum è pieno di reperti interessanti e, andandoci più di una volta, è possibile godersi anche le stanze meno frequentate, quelle con le collezioni meno famose e preziose, ma ricche di sorprese. Una di queste è costituita dall’armamentario magico di John Dee (1527-1608), matematico e astrologo di corte di Elisabetta I. Non dobbiamo stupirci del fatto che, all’epoca, un uomo di scienza si dedicasse alla magia: ricordiamoci, ad esempio, che più tardi Newton si dedicò all’alchimia e che il confine fra osservazione scientifica, esoterismo e religione non era ancora stato tracciato.

Nella vetrina dedicata a John Dee, spicca un oggetto nero tondeggiante, con una specie di manico su cui si vede un foro. Si tratta di uno specchio Azteco realizzano in Ossidiana Nera, che lo scienziato usava per riti di divinazione e per parlare con gli angeli.
Ossidiana nera, vi dice qualcosa? Se siete appassionati di Games of Throne, vi ricorderete del “Dragon Glass” e del potere che gli viene attribuito contro l’esercito dei morti. Non è la sola storia legata a questo materiale: la mitologia celtica e norica è costellata di armi di ossidiana in mano ai guerrieri o ai druidi, in grado di veicolare poteri soprannaturali. Tutt’oggi, coloro che praticano la Wicca si servono di strumenti in ossidiana per officiare i loro riti, utilizzando anche specchi simili a quello ritrovato tra gli averi di John Dee, tanto è vero che se ne possono acquistare di diverse dimensioni anche su Amazon.
Non sono riuscita a scoprire se John Dee fosse al corrente dell’origine mesoamericana dello specchio, ma è probabile che fosse un fatto noto e importante per caricare l’oggetto di un valore esoterico. Forse sapeva anche che lo specchio veniva usato per officiare dei riti, ma forse non conosceva Tezcatlipoca la divinità cui quei riti erano dedicati.
Il culto di Tezcatlipoca proveniva dalle civiltà Maya e Olmeche, e fu poi mutuato da quella Azteca. Era associato con diversi concetti, la cui convivenza nella stessa figura trovo estremamente interessante: egli è il dio del nord, della notte, del cielo stellato, del vento, della guerra, della stregoneria, ma anche della bellezza e della tentazione. Andava in giro avvolto in pelli di leopardo, con delle bande nere e uno specchio nero fumante, decorato da piume. Elegante e misterioso, era il cavaliere nero e l’antitesi del Quetzacoatl, il cavaliere bianco, di cui era fratello e nemico, e con il quale aveva creato la terra.

Sembra proprio che l’associazione della bellezza con il nero, carica di connotati magici, misteriosi e pericolosi, costituisse già per le civiltà precolombiane una sorta di standard, come poi si è affermato nella moda e nel design, fino ai giorni nostri.
Nero Artistico
Quadrato Nero: la nascita dell’arte astratta
Kazimir Severinovič Malevič aveva 37 anni quando espose il Quadrato Nero, non un ragazzino, eppure l’entusiasmo che la sua opera gli suscitava era talmente travolgente che pare gli avesse tolto il sonno. Non la chiamava neppure opera, ma scoperta: riteneva di aver trovato l’origine, di aver azzerato la storia dell’arte e di aver dato vita ad una nuova era. Era il 1915, a Pietroburgo.
Era il periodo delle avanguardie. Nel 1910 Picasso aveva inaugurato il cubismo e prima, nel 1909, Marinetti aveva lanciato il futurismo con il suo Manifesto. Malevič non voleva essere da meno: scrisse anche lui un manifesto, con il quale intenzionalmente indicava la sua avanguardia come il superamento del futurismo. Scrive M.: “Noi, che ancora ieri eravamo futuristi (…) ci siamo sbarazzati del futurismo, ed essendo i più audaci abbiamo sputato sull’altare della sua arte”. Il limite dei Futuristi è di non aver saputo sbarazzarsi del nemico più ostico che grava sull’arte: “l’oggettività”, mentre Malevič trova la via: “la costruzione di forme a partire da niente”. Il nuovo movimento artistico si chiamava Suprematismo, e decreta la superiorità dell’arte astratta e della pura sensibilità artistica, rappresentata dal colore, sull’arte figurativa e sull’oggetto in generale.
Presenta il suo manifesto in una esposizione che intitola “0.10. Ultima mostra futurista” e al centro vi pone il “Quadrato Nero”. Si capisce che è questo il fulcro della mostra, per il posto speciale che occupa: lo appese ad angolo fra due pareti, in alto, come se le altre opere non fossero che proiezioni del punto zero sulle pareti adiacenti.
Il Suprematismo non ebbe molto seguito e Malevič non godette di grande fortuna. La sua intuizione oggi appare ingenua, eppure nessuno prima di lui aveva rinunciato completamente all’oggetto.
Malevič stesso non riuscì a sostenere il peso di questo assolutismo, tanto è vero che tornò all’arte figurativa. Ma se si osserva un suo autoritratto, ironicamente abbigliato come Cristoforo Colombo, si nota in basso a destra un segno: quel segno.
ADDENDUM
Il Quadrato Nero di Malevich e il design contemporaneo
Grazie ad un post su Twitter di Blank Solver, ho scoperto che Raketa, un noto produttore russo (e prima sovietico) di orologi, ha lanciato nel 2020 un nuovo BIG ZERO dedicato al “Quadrato Nero”, in collaborazione con il Museo Nazionale di arte Russa (Russian State Tretyakov Gallery). Come si vede in foto, l’opera di Malevich non è semplicemente stampata sul quadrante, ma assemblata con un intarsio in pietra, che viene eseguito a mano su ogno quadrante.
Se siete rimasti affascinati dal connubio BIG ZERO, lo zero cosmico dell’arte astratta e il fascino eterno della pietra, vi potete procurare questo gioeillo ad un prezzo non proprio abbordabile, ma neppure proibitivo, qui.

Mi trovavo nelle profondità della Grotta del Vento in Garfagnana, quando la guida ci radunò in un luogo sicuro e spense le luci. Tutte le luci. Aspettai che l’occhio si abituasse alle tenebre, come di notte in una stanza buia, ma non accadde. Grazie ai rumori e all’eco sapevo che c’erano ancora persone e pareti di roccia intorno a me, ma non avevo mai sperimentato la più totale assenza di una fonte luminosa. Per quel che mi riguarda, quella fu la sola volta che vidi il nero assoluto.
Come abbiamo detto, un oggetto appare nero quando, dello spettro visibile di luce, non riflette che una minima parte. Il Nero Assoluto si avrebbe se l’oggetto, assorbendo tutto lo spettro luminoso, non riflettesse affatto. Ma si può produrre una tinta che sia in grado di opacizzare un oggetto a tal punto?
No, non siamo mai riusciti a riprodurre il nero assoluto, ma la tecnologia ci è andata vicina.
Esiste un materiale composto da nanotubi di carbonio in grado di trattenere fino al 99,96% delle radiazione dello spettro visivo: quindi, per noi, non ha colore e ci appare nero, di un nero assoluto, senza sfumature. Il nome commerciale di questo materiale è Vantablack, che sta per Vertically Aligned NanoTube Arrays Black ed è stato creato in Inghilterra dal National Physical Laboratory.
Ne è stata poi ricavata una vernice spray, che conserva quasi la stessa efficacia e che è stata concepita principalmente a scopi militari, ma qualcuno l’ha sperimentata per il marketing: la BMW ha presentato un concept della X6, nel 2019, completamente verniciato in Vantablack: lo ammetto, decisamente affascinante, ma non andrà in produzione.one.
E gli artisti come hanno reagito alla disponibilità di questa nuova tinta rivoluzionaria?
La risposta è una, nel senso che abbiamo a disposizione un solo punto di vista sull’argomento, quello di Anish Kapoor, lo scultore e architetto britannico che ha acquistato i diritti sul Vantablack per l’uso artistico. E quindi, per adesso, dobbiamo accontentarci della sua ricerca.
